There is no doubt that a toned tummy is something that many of us desire, but believe it or not, crunches may not be the answer.
According to Ben Lucas, the trainer of Sammy Robinson and Erin Holland to name a few, “People will spend hours in the gym doing crunches in order to work there Rectus Abdomonis (6 pack muscles), but in order to be a fully functioning, strong human, it’s important that you don’t neglect the rest of the muscles.”
“Your core is a complex series of muscles that includes everything but your limbs. It has three- dimensional depth and functional movement in all three plains of motion. Imagine that your core starts from your spine and then wraps around your body like a corset until it meets in the middle. You want that entire mid section, including your glutes to be strong.”
Here are Ben’s top tips for toning your tummy the holistic way.
It is fine to include specific core exercises into your workouts, such as crunches and Russian twists, but to get a really toned tummy I would suggest functional exercises or even boxing that work your entire body with a focus on your core. Just ensure your core is engaged as you are doing it. Some exercises that I love for core include mountain climbers, burpee, twists on the cable machine and boxing.
It’s true that abs are made in the kitchen and exercise only accounts for some of it. If you really want nice toned abs, try to eat a diet rich in Wholefoods. Minimise processed foods, eat lots of protein, veggies. Note that some fruit may bloat you but it is healthy so still eat it!
Focus on your gut health, your gut really is the key to so many things and the source of so many illnesses. Different things will work for different people, but digestive enzymes, apple cider vinegar, hot water and lemon or even a daily dose of probiotics.
As Arianna Huffington says “sleep your way to the top” and she is absolutely right. It will be hard to achieve any of your body goals if you are not sleeping properly.
Unfortunately, 1 in 3 Aussies are not getting enough sleep which is a shame for many reasons other than being grumpy, tired and possibly not as functions.
Research has shown that not sleeping enough has been linked to weight gain and obesity, in fact a major review found that sleeping for a short sleep duration included the likelihood of obesity by 89% is children and 55% in adults
Poor sleep can also increase your appetite which is of course a factor in having toned abs as well.
