In news that we’re totally fangirling over, Chelsea Football Club Women have announced the signing of Aussie Nike athlete Sam Kerr on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Joining the squad midseason of the 2019/20 Barclays Women’s Super League season, Sam will wear the number 20 shirt.
The current Captain for the Matildas says: ‘I am excited to join the Chelsea Football Club and challenge myself in a new league. Chelsea is a prestigious club that feel like a great cultural fit for me. Their success on the pitch and commitment to women’s football were important factors in making this decision.’
Adding: ‘It’s going to be a new challenge and experience, and I think it’ll only better me as a footballer. The opportunity to go to Europe to play, plus continue to play with Matildas as we look to Tokyo, it’s pretty exciting.’
As the all-time leading goal scorer in the NWSL and W-League, Sam has scored 40 goals in 41 games for club and country and was recently named MVP of the NSWL, making her the first player in NWSL history to finish as the leading scorer in three consecutive seasons.
Ahead of her exciting future with Chelsea, Sam says, ‘I am so grateful for my time playing in the NWSL and W-League, and for the incredible opportunities I’ve experienced. I want to thank my teammates and the coaches, I have grown so much for playing both in the US and Australia and I would not be where I am without the support.’
‘We are in an amazing moment for women’s football and I’m hopeful that this transfer can help move us forward.’
