Georgia Gibbs on diversity in the fashion industry, body confidence & the negative impacts of social media

'I come from a family of women that all had body confidence issues'

The power of social media on body confidence is at an all-time high and model Georgia Gibbs is using her hotly followed social media platforms in all the right ways to dispel its negative effects. Boasting over 617K followers, the blonde beauty is known for keeping it as real as it gets, letting her followers know when a picture has been edited in any way, shape or form. Why? Georgia’s goal is banish the falsely formed perception of looks on social media and encourage body confidence in every girl – no matter her size, shape, appearance, nationality or age.
Taking centre stage as Triple White’s Cover Girl, Georgia spoke to us about her push for diversity in the fashion industry, her all-inclusive AnyBODY initiative, the impact of social media on body confidence, her day on a plate and heaps of other must-know facts you’ll love her even more for. Talk to us about your push for diversity in the fashion industry when it comes to models and weight?

Diversity is essential, not optional. It’s needed so everyone can see a representation of themselves on adverts, whether it’s through a similar body shape, size, ethnicity or age. Otherwise, we are creating isolation within our society and making many members of the public feel unworthy and under-represented. We should be bringing people together, not pushing people apart and feeling separated.

Can you tell us about your AnyBODY initiative and where it came from?

AnyBODY came from my family background. I come from a family of women that all had body confidence issues. With a size 8, a size 12, a size 10 and a size 16, we found that no matter what size, women in my family were never satisfied with their appearance and I soon realised this was much of the public too.
Entering the modelling industry, I felt partly responsible for the way a lot of women felt when comparing themselves to unrealistic versions of models everywhere. When Kate Wasley and I started hanging out in Sydney, I saw an amazing opportunity to share the message that we were both passionate about and now it’s evolved into a platform with the purpose of building women’s confidence beyond appearance and encourage everyone to be the healthiest version of themselves – both mentally and physically.





Can you talk to us about why you make sure your followers know when a picture of yours on social media is edited?

I’ve been doing this as much as possible since 2015. I just felt that if you gave people context, maybe then they wouldn’t compare themselves to an unrealistic version of me. Instagram is a highlight feed and I think the best way to combat that is the power of context with your images.

If you could give one message to the younger generation of girls today, what would it be?

Stop looking at the girl next to you, that girl you can’t help but compare yourself to. You are not her and she is not you and that’s what makes each of you beautiful. No one can do what you do, from your heart to your mind, the way you speak or the way you make people feel. So love yourself because you are uniquely you and ever so special.

Growing up, did you always want to be a model?

The answer is no. I went to uni for occupational therapy and then journalism and business. I never wanted to model as I was rejected when I tried the first time and when I was young I knew I wasn’t confident enough to deal with the constant criticism.


How did your opportunity with Sports Illustrated come about?

I cast in 2016 didn’t get it! But flew to NY to give it a crack, fell in love with MJ and the team and the next year they gave me a shot and it was incredible.



What does a typical day on a plate look like for you?

Plenty of greens! Breakfast is usually my brunch bowl of greens, millet, buckwheat and eggs.

Lunch is usually green vegetables with some sort of fish.

Dinner is usually a veggie soup or stir fry. I am also currently working on my wellness program, Joy, which has so many delicious recipes that are so nourishing.

How often do you work out and what do you do?

I work out when I feel my body is up to it, I aim for 4-5 times a week but as long as I move my body every day I’m pretty happy!
I’m constantly on the move, so, I love working out from home, doing powerwalks around the hills by my house and partner workouts with my boyfriend in our backyard!

Tell us three things not many people know about you

I use to be a dancer, I love singing, I’m a hopeless romantic, I can be a bit of a nana sometimes, I can’t live without the sunshine and my favourite treat is red wine! That’s six, sorry!

What’s next for you?

Spreading as much JOY as I can, focusing on my next business venture and building myself to the healthiest version of myself I can!
