Dad sneakers, step aside, the ‘Mum Sneaker’ is officially a thing

Well, if fashion week said so...

Sir Isaac Newton once said, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

Sure, he probably wasn’t thinking about sneakers when he came up with his third law but it applies nonetheless! Confused? Allow me to elucidate!

Amongst the plethora of trends emerging from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, the rise of the “mum sneaker” was easily one of the most notable, marking its presence as the equal and opposite (oh hi Newton!) of the “ugly” dad sneaker that’s been doing the rounds at international fashion weeks.

What makes a “mum sneaker”, exactly?

Think sleek and streamlined, moving away from the chunky, “ugly” silhouette of the dad sneaker. It’s not minimalist or clean as such, but it is relaxed, a sort of nod to the ‘normcore’ trend of 2017.

Like the dad sneaker, the mum sneaker offers vintage vibes with a just a hint of kitschy appeal, sans the heavy, masculine shape.

New Balance’s old school 697 was, interestingly, the mum sneaker of choice at MBFWA. Popping up on the feet of Sydney’s style elite throughout the week, this is one trend that everyone can actually try thanks to its simplicity and comfort factor (your heels might miss you but your feet won’t!).
